Reslaw Wood

Walking into Reslaw Wood from Ross-on-Wye feels like stepping sideways out of the world. It's proper forest - tall trees, dappled light, the kind of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of traffic. The woodland sits just outside this market town and gives you everything you want from a Gloucestershire forest walk without needing to trek for hours.

The wood itself is managed forestry, which means it's well-kept and genuinely peaceful. Paths wind through without being manicured to death, and there's genuine woodland atmosphere. You'll see oak, beech, and conifers mixed in together. The floor is soft underfoot even in dry weather. Dogs love it here, families with young walkers find it manageable, and it's the kind of place you actually want to sit on a log for twenty minutes rather than push through to tick it off.

Allow an hour to two hours depending on how you wander. There's no entrance fee that we're aware of, and no facilities at the wood itself so bring what you need. It works brilliantly as a half-morning activity if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Haywood Farm and Darnells' Farm are both within easy striking distance. Pair it with a proper lunch in Ross-on-Wye town centre afterwards. Not a destination that'll dominate your holiday, but exactly the sort of local walk that stops a week in the area from feeling samey.
