Market Square remains the town's beating heart - Thursday market days still draw proper crowds. The 17th-century Market House stands proud in the centre, while independent shops and cafes fill the surrounding streets. It's refreshingly free of chain store blandness.

Walking enthusiasts know Ross as a gateway to the Wye Valley Walk, but the surrounding area offers plenty for those preferring shorter strolls. Newent Woods sprawls across several square miles to the southeast, while smaller patches like Acorn Wood and Kilcot Wood provide easier afternoon rambles. The forestry here is properly managed - you'll find decent paths rather than bramble-choked chaos.

St Mary's Church in nearby Linton deserves a detour if you're exploring the villages. The Norman architecture is well-preserved, and the churchyard offers lovely views back towards Ross.

Getting here couldn't be simpler - the A40 runs right past, connecting Ross to the M50 and onwards to London or South Wales. Regular bus services link the town to Hereford, about 15 miles north, where you'll find the nearest railway station.

You're within easy reach of the town's amenities while being properly positioned for exploring the Wye Valley's walking routes and woodland trails.
