Rheabower Wood

The woods south of Appleby-in-Westmorland don't announce themselves with fanfare, which is rather the point. Rheabower Wood is a proper slice of native broadleaf forest - the kind of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of your own breathing. Beech, oak and ash dominate the canopy, and the forest floor stays damp enough that ferns genuinely thrive here rather than just surviving.

There's no visitor centre, no marked loop walks as far as I can tell, no coffee kiosk. You get the wood as it is. That makes it ideal for anyone after a genuine woodland walk rather than a manicured stroll - families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will do fine here, particularly if they're keen on spotting trees and wildlife. Parents of toddlers might find the lack of paths irritating.

Access appears to be informal, and I'd budget an hour to two hours depending on how deep into the trees you want to venture. Spring's lovely if you want to see bluebells do their thing; autumn gives you decent colours without the summer muggy feeling. The walk from Appleby itself would take you through farmland first, so it's a proper expedition rather than a drive-and-wander scenario.

If you're staying at Wild Rose Holiday Park nearby, this breaks up a park holiday without requiring the trip into Appleby proper. It's the sort of place that reminds you why walking in woods beats most other ways of spending an afternoon. Not Instagram-worthy. All the better for it.
