Rift Dene

Rift Dene is a proper woodland walk through mixed forest just outside Stocksfield, where the Dene Burn cuts a dramatic ravine through the landscape. The paths wind through dense trees, dropping down into the gorge with some decent elevation change - nothing brutal, but you'll feel your legs on the way back up. It's the sort of place where you stumble across old stone walls and realize someone's been living and working this land for centuries. The burn itself is the real draw: water tumbling over rocks, especially impressive after rain when the whole dene seems to come alive. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it steady, less if you're just after a quick blast through. There's something almost meditative about being surrounded by beech and oak, the sound muffled by the forest floor.
