Rigg Ends Wood

The woodland at Rigg Ends, just outside Richmond, is the sort of place you wander into without expecting much and come out rather glad you did. It's proper woodland - the real thing, with dense tree cover and proper paths that feel like you've stepped away from the world without actually going anywhere remotely exotic.

The walk itself takes about an hour if you're not stopping, but you'll want to. The trees create this lovely enclosed feeling, and depending on the season you get wildflowers, decent light filtering through the canopy, or that satisfying crunch of leaf litter underfoot. It's not dramatic - no viewpoints, no waterfall waiting at the end - but it's exactly what woodland walking should be.

For families with decent walkers, this works well. Young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes, but teenagers who don't want a strenuous hike will be fine here. The paths are manageable and you won't get genuinely lost, which counts for something. History buffs won't find much to hold their attention - it's a working woodland, not an estate with heritage attached.

The real appeal is combining it with Kiplin Country Park, just five miles away, which gives you a fuller day out. Do Rigg Ends Wood in the morning - it's best early when the light's better - then head to Kiplin for whatever else they've got on. It's a solid addition to a Richmond-area park holiday rather than a destination in itself.
