Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

You're standing at the edge of something genuinely dramatic - a volcanic ring that rose from the earth 300 million years ago, and it still dominates the landscape around Newry like nothing else. The Ring of Gullion is an actual geological marvel, a near-perfect circle of basalt hills that cradles Slieve Gullion at its heart, and walking here feels like you've stepped into the earth's own architecture.

The main draw is Slieve Gullion itself - a proper climb, this one. Around 450 metres up, and the path is no gentle stroll, but the summit cairn and the views across County Armagh, Newry, and down into the mourne range make it worth every huffing step. The full circuit takes a good three to four hours depending on fitness, though you can do shorter walks around the base if you're not after the peak.

Historians will find themselves properly absorbed here too. The mythology wrapped around Slieve Gullion runs deep - Celtic folklore, Iron Age forts, Bronze Age cairns. It's layered, literally and figuratively.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might struggle with the Slieve Gullion ascent itself, though the lower trails around the ring are manageable. It's free to access, and you can spend anywhere from an hour poking around the base to a half-day if you're doing the full circuit.
