Ripley Castle

The first thing that strikes you about Ripley Castle is how proper it looks - all towers and crenellations rising from proper parkland just outside Knaresborough. This isn't some crumbling ruin you have to squint at; it's a genuine working castle that's been in the same family since 1320, which is the kind of continuity you don't often find.

You can wander the grounds for free, which is lovely, though if you want inside the house itself you'll need to pay admission. The estate sprawls across parkland with proper views, and there's enough to keep you occupied for a couple of hours if you're into that sort of thing. The village of Ripley itself - a model village rebuilt by the castle's owners - sits just beyond, and it's worth a quick look.

Historically minded visitors will find plenty to chew on: Tudor fireplaces, a priest hole, the works. Families with younger kids might find the grounds more engaging than the interior, which can feel a bit heavy on the furniture and lighter on the interactive stuff. Walkers should note the parkland walks are decent without being spectacular.

If you're staying at Knaresborough Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Windmill Retreats - both just a few miles away - Ripley works well as a half-day addition to exploring the area. Pair it with a walk down to the Stray near Harrogate or the riverside paths around Knaresborough itself. Worth the detour if you're already in North Yorkshire, though don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip.
