River Dee At Holt

The River Dee at Holt is one of those places you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out - and that's rather the point. Just south of Chester, this stretch of the river is wide, slow-moving, and genuinely lovely on a bright day. The water's proper dark, the banks are lined with trees that lean right over the edges, and there's a real sense of the Welsh Marches beginning to creep in.

It's not a working tourist attraction with facilities or visitor centres. What you get is a chance to walk alongside the water, spot the occasional fisherman, and experience the Dee as locals do rather than as a coached tour might present it. The banks are accessible in places, though wear proper shoes - it can get muddy after rain. An hour's wander will take you through some genuinely peaceful countryside; this close to Chester, that's rarer than you'd think.

Families with young children will find it pleasant but perhaps lacking in the sort of drama they might want - there's no waterfall, no dramatic gorge. Walkers, though, should make the effort. The river itself rewards a slow pace, and the footpaths connecting Holt to nearby settlements make for decent rambles.

If you're staying at Manor Wood holiday park just a couple of miles away, you'd be daft not to drive over here for an afternoon. It's free, takes as long as you fancy, and works equally well as a quick leg-stretch or the foundation for a proper walk. Best visited in spring or early autumn when the light's lower and the banks aren't choked with summer crowds.
