The River Exe cuts through Devon like a proper ribbon of green, and from Tiverton you can follow it for miles on foot without ever feeling like you're trudging through a tourist trap. It's not a single viewpoint or attraction - it's more that the river itself is the thing, especially if you're based nearby at somewhere like Nirvana Glamping.

Walking along the banks rewards you with the sort of scenery that makes you understand why people move to Devon and never leave. Water meadows, tree-lined stretches, the occasional heron if you're quiet enough. The path quality varies depending on which stretch you tackle, but between Tiverton and Exeter the riverside route offers plenty of stops and access points.

This works best for walkers rather than families after a quick photo op, though older kids enjoy spotting wildlife along the banks. Bring proper boots if it's been wet - the ground gets boggy. The river's decent for fishing too if you've got a rod and a licence, and in summer the shallower sections see paddlers about.

There's no admission charge since it's just countryside. Allow as long as you fancy really - you could do an hour's stroll or make a proper day of it. The stretch near Tiverton is quieter than areas closer to Exeter. Best in spring when the water level's good and everything's green, though autumn brings decent light for photography.
