Rob Haining's Wood sits just outside Carlisle, a proper pocket of forest that feels miles from the city despite being barely a stone's throw away. It's the kind of place where you can lose an afternoon wandering between the trees without a map or a plan - the paths are clear enough, and there's something satisfying about the simplicity of it all.

This is woodland walking at its most straightforward. No visitor centre, no facilities, no fuss. You get what you came for: a decent stretch of forest, birdsong, and the occasional glimpse of open sky through the canopy. It's particularly good in spring when the undergrowth comes alive, or autumn when the light hits the leaves at that perfect angle that makes everything look like a painting. Families with young children will manage it fine - the terrain isn't punishing - though it won't hold their attention for hours on end. Serious walkers might find it a bit compact for a full day out, but as part of a wider Carlisle-area trip it works brilliantly.

If you're staying at Low Moor Head or High Gaitle caravan parks nearby, this is an ideal spot to stretch your legs for an hour or so without driving anywhere. Ditto Camelot Holiday Park just down the road. It won't wow you, and it's not the sort of place you'd plan a holiday around, but it's a useful little green space that actually delivers on what it promises - a walk in the woods without the pretension.
