Robin Hood's Stride

Two weathered gritstone pillars rise from the moorland like ancient sentries, standing 200 metres apart on this exposed ridge above the Lathkill Valley. Local legend claims Robin Hood used to leap between these towering rocks - a feat that would require superhuman powers given the distance. The western pillar, known as Mock Beggar's Hall, offers the better scramble for those with a head for heights.

Walkers and rock climbers get the most from this spot. The approach from Youlgreave takes about 45 minutes across proper Peak District terrain - boggy in places, so decent boots are essential. Families with young children might struggle with the rough ground, though older kids love clambering on the rocks.

What makes this place special isn't just the geological drama. The views stretch across to Kinder Scout and Bleaklow on clear days, with the limestone dales carved deep below. It's proper wilderness up here, even though you're only a few miles from Bakewell's tourist crowds.

Allow at least three hours for the round trip from Youlgreave, longer if you fancy exploring the surrounding moors. The rocks are free to visit year-round, though winter brings fierce winds that'll knock you sideways. Darwin Forest and the other holiday parks around Bakewell make decent bases for exploring this wilder side of Derbyshire - just don't expect Robin Hood to show up.
