Roche Abbey

The ruins of Roche Abbey sit alone in a quiet valley south of Doncaster, and there's something properly moving about finding them. What's left is mostly foundation stones and fragments of what was once a Cistercian monastery - enough to piece together the scale of the place without needing much imagination. The valley location means it's sheltered from wind but can hold damp after rain, so pick your weather. There's no café or facilities on site - this is proper ruins, not a heritage attraction with gift shop. That's rather the point.
