Rock Coppice

A proper woodland walk rather than a tourist attraction, Rock Coppice sits just outside Hereford and does exactly what it says on the tin - ancient coppiced woodland with the River Wye running alongside. The forest floor is thick with bluebells in spring, and come autumn the canopy turns that burnt orange you don't get in manicured parks. Walking through here feels genuinely separate from anything else nearby. Most routes take between 45 minutes and two hours depending on which paths you fancy. It's free to access and there's usually space to pull over on the lane, though it's not signposted like a proper car park. Best time is late April through May when the bluebells are at their peak, or October if you want proper colour. Families with young kids will manage fine on the flatter sections, but buggies are a non-starter. Older children and walkers will get the most from it. If you're stopping at any of the glamping spots nearby - Heart of the Wye or By the Wye are closest at just over a mile away - this is a good morning sortie before heading into Hay-on-Wye. It doesn't compare to some of the bigger forest walks in Powys, but it's worth the detour if you're already in the area and fancy something low-key.
