Rock Methodist Church

The squat stone Methodist chapel sits just back from Rock's main street, easy to miss if you're rushing down to the beach. Built in the 19th century when Methodism had proper grip on fishing communities along this coast, it's a straightforward working church rather than a museum piece. The interior is simple - whitewashed walls, wooden pews, that particular smell of old hymn books and furniture polish that never quite leaves these places. No fancy stained glass or ornate tombs. Just honest craft.

It's worth popping in if you're staying at Porthilly Beach Holiday Park or any of the surrounding sites - Rock's small enough that you'll wander past anyway. The church tells you something true about what this corner of Cornwall actually was, away from the postcard prettiness. History types will find it genuinely interesting; families with restless kids might spend five minutes maximum, then head back to the sand. The Padstow Holiday Village lot won't find it on their radar at all, though they're only two miles away.

Access and opening times aren't reliably published, so check locally when you arrive - ask at the village shop or your holiday park office. Free entry if you do get in. Allow ten minutes, fifteen if you're the sort who reads every inscription. It's a quiet spot to sit and gather yourself between beach days, and there's something rather lovely about that in itself.
