Roman Fort

Walking the ramparts of a 2,000-year-old Roman fort in the middle of Snowdonia feels properly surreal. This is where the legions dug in to control north Wales, and you can still trace the outline of the fortress in the grass and tumbled stone. The fort sits just outside Caernarfon, close enough for a morning visit but far enough that most tourists miss it entirely.

What you're actually looking at are earthworks and the foundations of what was once a substantial military installation. The layout is still readable if you know what you're looking for - the rectangular shape, the ditches, the spots where barracks once stood. There's a real sense of the empire's reach here, something you don't quite get from a museum display case.

Historyheads will spend a good hour picking over the site and reading between the bumps in the ground. Families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract - it's not a dramatic ruin, more a case of piecing together what was here. Walkers will appreciate it as a worthwhile detour on a longer loop around the area, especially if you're already camping at Cae Du or Beddgelert nearby.

The site is free and accessible year-round. Allow 45 minutes to an hour. Go early morning when the light's good and the place is quiet. It pairs well with Caernarfon Castle down the road - one shows what the Romans built, the other what came after. Real Wales, not the postcard version.
