Rothiemay Castle

The ruins of Rothiemay Castle sit on a low hill about five miles south of Huntly, a crumbling Z-plan fortress that once mattered rather more than it does now. What's left is mainly the tower block - substantial enough to make you understand the original footprint, but weathered down to something quietly melancholic. You can walk right up to it and get a proper feel for the scale, though there's no interior access and no visitor facilities whatsoever. The approach is straightforward enough from the farm track, though you'll want sturdy shoes if it's been wet.

This is a spot for people who like their history raw and uninterpreted - no plaques, no gift shop, no roped-off zones. If you're into 16th-century lairdship and the visual grammar of Scottish defensible houses, you'll find something here.
