Round Hill

Standing at 1,808 feet above sea level, this unassuming moorland peak offers some of the finest views across the Pennines without the crowds that plague more famous summits. Round Hill sits on the border between Lancashire and West Yorkshire, easily accessible from Holmfirth, making it a proper walker's mountain rather than a tourist trap.

The summit itself is marked by a modest cairn and trig point, but what draws you here are the sweeping panoramas. On a clear day, you can see across to the Peak District and as far as the Yorkshire Dales. The approach from most directions involves a steady climb across open moorland - not particularly challenging for regular walkers, though the terrain can be boggy after rain.

Families with older children who enjoy a proper hike will find this rewarding, but it's definitely one for those who appreciate wild, unspoilt countryside rather than manicured attractions. Allow three to four hours for the round trip, depending on your starting point and pace.
