Round Hill

Sharp winds whip across the summit at 557 metres, but the panoramic views across the Yorkshire Dales make every step of the climb worthwhile. Round Hill sits proudly above Ribblesdale, offering one of the finest vantage points for surveying the Three Peaks territory without actually tackling Pen-y-ghent or Ingleborough yourself.

Walkers with decent fitness will find this a proper workout - the ascent from near Horton-in-Ribblesdale takes about 90 minutes each way and gets steep in places. The reward? Sweeping views that take in Ribblehead Viaduct to the north and the limestone scars of Pen-y-ghent's southern face. On clear days, you can spot the Lakeland fells beyond.

Families with older children who enjoy a challenge will love this, though it's definitely not pushchair territory. The path can be boggy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the best light for photography, plus you'll likely have the summit to yourself.
