Roundhill Coppice

Ancient woodland doesn't get much more authentic than this stretch of mixed forest just outside Henley-in-Arden. Roundhill Coppice feels properly wild - the kind of place where you'll find bluebells carpeting the floor in spring and muddy boots are a given whatever the season.

Walkers looking for a decent ramble will find plenty to explore here, though don't expect waymarked trails or visitor facilities. This is old-school woodland wandering where you make your own path through oak, ash and hazel. The coppiced sections tell the story of centuries of traditional woodland management.

Families with young children might find it a bit challenging - the terrain can be uneven and there's nothing in the way of interpretation boards or activities. But older kids who don't mind getting their hands dirty will love the freedom to properly explore.

It's free to wander (as far as anyone knows), and you could easily spend a couple of hours here if you're not in a rush. Early morning visits in spring are particularly lovely when the light filters through the canopy.

For those staying at nearby spots like Wootton Park Glamping Pods or Island Meadow, it makes a cracking alternative to the more touristy attractions around Stratford-upon-Avon. Sometimes a proper bit of English woodland is exactly what you need.
