Rowan Wood

Ancient woodland on the edge of Maidstone, Rowan Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is precisely why it works so well. The forest floor is thick with bracken and moss, the canopy dense enough that even on bright days it feels properly atmospheric. You're looking at mature oak and beech trees, with a network of paths that range from gentle strolls to more serious woodland rambles depending on which direction you fancy.

It's best suited to walkers and families who don't mind mud underfoot. Kids will find plenty to explore - fallen logs to clamber over, streams to splash through, the occasional patch of wild bluebells if you time it right in spring. There's a genuine sense of being away from it all, despite being minutes from Maidstone town centre. Bring proper boots though. After wet weather the paths can be boggy, and drainage isn't brilliant in spots.

Free to access, naturally, and there's no time limit - though most people reckon on an hour or two depending on how far they venture. The beauty of Rowan Wood is it doesn't demand much. No visitor centre, no cafe, no facilities really. Just trees and space.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Chegworth Mill Glamping or Oak View Holiday Park are both excellent - this makes a lovely half-morning walk before heading elsewhere. Pair it with a wander through Maidstone itself, or use it as a break from the car. Worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy some proper greenery.
