This 18th-century mansion near South Ayrshire has been converted into galleries and studios where you'll find contemporary art exhibitions, craft displays, and sometimes working artists you can actually chat to. It's refreshingly unpolished for a museum.

The house itself is the thing, really. Rooms of decent proportions filled with rotating exhibitions means you won't know exactly what you're walking into - which could be inspiring or a bit hit-or-miss depending on the season.
