RSPB Budby South Forest

The woodland around Budby South Forest, just outside Edwinstowe, is prime birdwatching country - and the RSPB manages this patch specifically for that reason. You're walking through coniferous forest with open glades, the kind of habitat that attracts woodpeckers, crossbills, and if you're lucky, the odd sparrowhawk cutting through the trees. The trails are straightforward, well-maintained, and you can spend anywhere from an hour to half a day depending on how serious you are about spotting things.

Birders will absolutely love it here. The forest sits within the broader Sherwood area, so it works brilliantly if you're already exploring Clumber Park or staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Sherwood Pines Camping or Center Parcs. It's free to access and you can turn up whenever suits you. Bring binoculars - proper ones - and a bird guide. Spring and autumn are when migration brings in more interesting species, though winter can be surprisingly rewarding for resident birds.

Kids will find it fine if they're the sort to actually enjoy looking for birds rather than wanting high-octane thrills. The main appeal here is quiet observation. There are no visitor facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared with water and snacks. It's a proper nature reserve, not a theme park. If your group includes someone genuinely interested in woodland ecology or bird identification, this is worth the detour. Otherwise, the bigger draw of actual Sherwood Forest or Clumber Park might hold more appeal.
