Edwinstowe

The legendary home of Robin Hood packs a proper punch. Edwinstowe sits right in the heart of Sherwood Forest, where ancient oaks still stand sentinel over the same woodland paths that folklore claims once echoed with outlaw footsteps. The Major Oak - all gnarled trunk and sprawling canopy - remains the star attraction, though it's now propped up and fenced off to protect its estimated 800-year lifespan.

Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve stretches for miles around the village, offering everything from gentle family walks to proper hiking trails through heathland and birch groves. The Sherwood Forest Visitors Centre does a decent job of bringing the Robin Hood story to life without being too cheesy about it. RSPB Sherwood Forest and Budby South Forest provide excellent birdwatching, particularly for woodpeckers and nuthatches.

Beyond the forest, St. Mary's Church is worth a look - it's where Robin supposedly married Maid Marian, though historians might disagree. The village itself feels refreshingly normal for somewhere so steeped in legend. A few cafes, the Craft Centre with local pottery and woodwork, and not much tourist tat.

Getting here is straightforward enough - it's about 20 minutes north of Mansfield on the A6075, with regular buses from Nottingham taking around 45 minutes. Staying at one of the nearby parks like Sherwood Pines Camping puts you right on the forest's doorstep, perfect for early morning walks before the crowds arrive and late evening strolls when the woodland feels properly atmospheric.
