RSPB Ham Wall

The RSPB reserve at Ham Wall, just outside Street in Somerset, is a proper wetland where you actually stand a decent chance of spotting something interesting. Reedbeds, open water, and rough grassland make up the habitat, and the birds respond accordingly - you'll see lapwings, redshanks, and if you time it right, the occasional hobby cutting through the air.

It's a walking destination rather than a stop-for-an-hour job. There are trails threading through the reserve, and binoculars are essential unless you're happy squinting at distant silhouettes. The paths can be boggy, so wellies aren't a bad shout, particularly after rain. Families with young children will find it manageable if the kids are keen on wildlife; those after a gentle stroll might find the uneven terrain a bit much.

Bring a notebook if you're into birding - the sightings log often reveals what's been about. Spring and autumn are the real draw here, when migration kicks in. Summer's quieter, winter cold but rewarding if you catch the visiting species.

Stay at one of the nearby parks - Bobsfield Campsite is closest at just over two miles away, while Old Oaks Touring and Castle Farm Campsite sit around four and a half miles off. Ham Wall sits well within reach for a morning's birdwatching before heading back to base. It's the sort of place where you'll either have a brilliant half-day or regret the drive, depending entirely on what the birds decide to show you.
