RSPB Medmerry

The RSPB reserve at Medmerry, just outside Chichester, is a working wetland that feels properly wild for Sussex. You're looking at 300-plus acres of lagoons, reedbeds and wet grassland - the sort of place where you actually see birds rather than squint at distant shapes through binoculars.

What makes it different from your standard birdwatching spot is that this was deliberately flooded in 2013 after decades of intensive farming. The RSPB created it from scratch, which means the habitat is young and energetic. Spoonbills, marsh harriers and avocets turn up regularly. In winter the numbers swell dramatically.

You'll want sensible shoes and patience. The main path loops around the lagoons and takes a good couple of hours if you're not stopping constantly. There are hides dotted about - proper ones with windows and benches, not ramshackle affairs. Early morning or late afternoon gives you the best light and bird activity, though honestly anytime outside midday works.

Families with older kids (say eight plus) will get something out of it. Younger children find the lack of obvious "things to do" a bit dull. It's free to visit, which is a bonus, and there's no time pressure.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Stubcroft Farm or West Sands Holidays are closest - it's a proper half-day outing. Chichester's only five miles away if you want an afternoon in town after. The reserve doesn't demand you're a twitcher. Just expect to move slowly and actually look at things.
