Deep in the Forest of Dean, this RSPB reserve sits on what was once a bustling colliery site. Now ancient woodland and heath have reclaimed the land, creating one of the best spots in Gloucestershire for watching birds of prey. The reserve covers 700 acres of mixed habitat - from dense oak woods to open heathland where gorse blooms yellow in spring.

Families will love the well-marked trails that wind through the trees, though the terrain can be uneven in places. Keep your eyes peeled for peregrine falcons, buzzards and the occasional goshawk. The old railway cutting provides a natural corridor for wildlife, and it's not uncommon to spot deer picking their way through the undergrowth.

Birdwatchers get the real treat here. Dawn and dusk are prime times for raptors, and the hide overlooking the central clearing offers excellent views without disturbing the wildlife. Even non-twitchers will appreciate the peaceful atmosphere - it's a proper escape from the busy A48 that runs between Lydney and Chepstow.

Plan on two to three hours if you're walking the full circuit. The reserve makes an excellent addition to a Forest of Dean break, especially if you're staying at nearby Whitemead Forest Park or Bracelands Campsite. Pack layers - the woodland can be surprisingly cool even on warm days.
