Ruthin Gaol Museum - Amgueddfa Carchar Rhuthun

A Victorian prison isn't the usual holiday draw, but Ruthin Gaol is genuinely unsettling in the best way. Built in 1654 and operating until 1916, the place still feels oppressive - you'll walk through actual cells where inmates were held, see the exercise yard where they shuffled in silence, and read accounts of their lives that stick with you long after you've left.

The museum doesn't sanitise things. It's frank about the brutality of 19th-century justice - children were imprisoned here for minor theft, women endured solitary confinement, and the whole operation ran on Victorian notions of punishment that seem barbaric now. Staff dress in period costume, which could feel gimmicky but instead adds weight to the storytelling.

This works best for teenagers and adults interested in social history. Young children will find it grim rather than engaging, though the costume staff sometimes soften things for families. Allow two hours minimum to do it properly - rushing defeats the point.

Ruthin itself is a handsome market town worth a morning's poke around, and if you're basing yourself at Clwydian Glamping Pods just outside town, the gaol makes a perfect rainy-day activity. The walk from the car park into town is pleasant enough, and you'll likely grab lunch at one of the cafes once you've finished. Not cheerful, but absolutely worth your time.
