Saddam's Wall

Standing here feels a bit odd, if I'm honest. This section of defensive wall along Swansea's coastline earned its nickname during the Gulf War era - locals started calling it Saddam's Wall because of its stark concrete appearance and defensive purpose. The reality is far more mundane: it's a sea wall built to protect the coastal road and properties from storm damage.

What you get is a decent elevated walk with views across Swansea Bay on a clear day. The Mumbles and Gower Peninsula stretch out to the west, while the city sprawls behind you. It's not spectacular, but it's free and gives you a proper sense of Swansea's geography. Families with pushchairs can manage it easily - the path is paved and level.

Walkers treating this as part of a longer coastal route will find it connects well with other seafront paths. Otherwise, twenty minutes here is probably enough unless you're really keen on sea walls and urban coastal views. The name might suggest something more dramatic, but it's essentially a functional bit of coastal engineering that happens to offer a reasonable vantage point.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Hillend or Pitton Cross, it makes for an easy evening stroll when the kids need burning off. Just don't expect dramatic clifftop views - this is Swansea's working coastline, not the wild Gower.
