Saint Andrew's Church, Northwold

The flint tower of Saint Andrew's Church rises above the flat Norfolk landscape about a mile east of Thetford, and it's the sort of thing you spot by accident when you're driving through the fens. The building itself dates back to medieval times, with enough Norman and later work to keep church spotters happy for a proper look round. Inside, there's decent woodwork and some interesting monuments - nothing that'll blow your mind, but solid parish church stuff that rewards a quiet twenty minutes with a guidebook.

This is really one for the history-minded rather than casual visitors. If you're into medieval churches and Norfolk's religious architecture, you'll want to add it to your route. Families with young kids will find it peaceful enough, though there's not much to keep them occupied once they've climbed the tower stairs - if that's even allowed on the day you visit.

The practical answer is you can usually just walk in during daylight hours, though checking ahead with Thetford's tourist office wouldn't hurt. Free admission is standard for these village churches, and you'll spend twenty minutes here maximum unless you're really into the detail.

If you're staying at Oak Lodge Glamping or Grange Farm Touring Park for a Norfolk break, it's an easy detour on a drive toward Thetford itself. Worth a stop if you're already in the area, but don't travel far out of your way specially.
