Saint John the Evangelist R.C. Church

The red sandstone bulk of Saint John the Evangelist sits quietly on the edge of Fort William, easy to miss if you're rushing past on the main road. Built in the Victorian era, it's got that solid, no-nonsense Scottish Gothic feel - red stone, proper proportions, the kind of church that was meant to last.

Inside is where it gets interesting. The interior's got genuine character without being overwrought. Stained glass catches the light decently, and there's a real sense of calm once you step through the doors. It's the sort of place worth twenty minutes of your time if you're into church architecture or just need a quiet moment away from the Fort William bustle.

Families won't find much to occupy kids here beyond pointing at the windows, but walkers doing the Glen Nevis circuit often duck in to warm up. History types will appreciate the Victorian craftsmanship. You can usually access it during daylight hours, and admission's free - it's a working parish church, after all.

If you're camped at Ben Nevis Holiday Park or Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park, it's a straightforward walk into town. Far better than another obligatory museum visit on a rainy afternoon. Don't expect to spend more than half an hour here, but it's worth the detour if you're already exploring Fort William properly.
