Saint Wilfrid's Church

The Saxon stonework here is proper medieval - we're talking 10th century foundations that have somehow survived everything from the Norman conquest to Victorian "restoration". Saint Wilfrid's sits just outside Bognor Regis, far enough from the seafront chaos to feel genuinely peaceful, close enough that you're not trudging through the countryside for hours.

Inside, the church is modest but genuine. Thick walls, narrow windows, a chancel that speaks to centuries of quiet worship rather than grand gestures. The font's ancient, the roof's been replaced more than once, and there's that particular smell churches have - stone and history and polish all mixed together. You can spend twenty minutes here or stay longer if church architecture grabs you.

Family groups won't find interactive displays or play areas, but older kids interested in history will get something real rather than theme-park fakery. It's the sort of place adults appreciate more than children, if we're honest. No admission charge as far as anyone can tell, though do check locally before travelling.

If you're staying at Butlins just down the road or camping at Rowan Park, this makes for a decent break from the holiday park routine - fifteen minutes' drive and you're somewhere that feels properly English and genuinely old. Pair it with a walk around Bognor's quieter streets and you've got a solid half-day. Don't expect crowds. Don't expect facilities. Do expect the real thing.
