Site of Hundred House of Aldwick

The Hundred House of Aldwick is one of those spots that makes you realise how much local history gets quietly forgotten. This was once a proper administrative centre - the meeting place where the Hundred (an old Saxon division of land) would gather to sort out disputes and collect taxes. What you'll find now is a historic site marking where it all happened, just inland from Bognor Regis.

There's not much physical structure left to speak of, which is fair enough given its age, but if you're into Anglo-Saxon governance and local history, it's worth a detour. The site gives you a real sense of how these communities were organised centuries before modern councils came along. It's the kind of place that takes twenty minutes to visit properly - a quiet think rather than a full afternoon out.

This works best if you're already staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Butlins is just 1.5 miles away, or Haven Church Farm if you want something less frantic. Bognor Regis itself is right on your doorstep, so you can easily combine it with a beach visit or a wander round the seafront. The site itself won't cost you a penny, and there are no opening hours to worry about since it's an open historic site.

Family groups might find it a bit slow unless the kids are seriously into medieval history. Walkers passing through the area, though, will find it makes a decent waypoint with some actual substance to it.
