Salcombe Retreat

The walk down to Salcombe Retreat takes you through proper coastal Devon - all wooded paths and sudden glimpses of water before you round a bend and find yourself standing on a small peninsula looking straight out at the Salcombe estuary. It's a peaceful spot, the kind of place locals know about and tourists miss while hunting for bigger attractions.

What you're looking at is a retreat in the truest sense - a sheltered inlet where the water's usually calm, ringed by trees and backed by steep hillsides. It's less of a "doing" destination and more about standing still for twenty minutes and watching the light change on the water. Walkers get the most from it, particularly anyone doing longer coastal paths in the area. Families with young children might find the walk down manageable but there's not much actual activity once you arrive - no facilities, no rock pools, just the view.

The nearest town is Kingsbridge, about forty minutes by car, so you're talking a proper expedition rather than a quick stop. If you're staying at Karrageen Caravan & Camping Park or one of the other excellent sites dotted round here - South Devon Camping Lower Terawhiti Farm is only three miles away - it makes sense as an afternoon walk, particularly if the weather's decent. Don't expect facilities or crowds. Do expect quiet water, shade, and the kind of stillness that reminds you why people move to the South Hams.
