Sales Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured nature reserve, Sales Wood sits just outside Ashford and feels like the kind of place locals know about but tourists miss entirely. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, the canopy dense enough that even on bright days you're walking in dappled shade. Paths wind through without being over-signposted - which is refreshing, though you'll want to know where you're going before you arrive.

It's ideal for walkers wanting something low-key rather than spectacular. You won't find dramatic viewpoints or rare orchids, just proper old woodland doing what it does. Kids will enjoy it for an hour or so if they're the type to hunt for insects and climb fallen logs, but it's not a destination in itself - more a welcome break between other activities. The ground can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. Timing-wise, spring when the bluebells are out is worth planning for, though you'll need to check locally when they peak. Summer's fine but can feel gloomy under the thick canopy.

If you're staying at Broadhembury Caravan & Camping Park or Dunn Street Farm Campsite nearby, this makes a decent morning leg-stretch. It's the sort of place that slots neatly into a wider Kent itinerary rather than commanding a trip of its own. Worth knowing about, less worth driving miles for.
