The River Windrush carves through Salmonsbury Meadows just outside Bourton-on-the-Water, and it's one of those quietly proper spots that most visitors completely miss. This is a Site of Special Scientific Interest - which sounds dull but actually means the wildflower meadows and riverside habitats here matter. A lot.

Walking the meadow paths, you'll spot orchids in season, fritillaries if you're lucky, and the riverbanks are thick with willows and alders. It's the sort of place where you notice things - the light on the water changes every few minutes, and the bird life is genuinely impressive. Bring binoculars or don't; either way, it's a solid 45-minute wander that feels properly rural despite being minutes from Bourton's tourist buzz.
