Slaughter Coppice

The woods around Slaughter Coppice are proper Cotswolds - all dappled light filtering through beech and oak, with that particular smell of leaf mould and damp earth that makes you remember why you came to the countryside in the first place. It's a working forest rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means you get the real thing: fallen branches to clamber over, muddy patches where deer have been, birdsong that actually feels wild.

This is walker's territory. The forest sits near Bourton-on-the-Water, so you can string together a decent morning ramble through the trees and still have time for lunch by the river. The paths aren't heavily signed, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mood - adds a bit of adventure, at least. Two or three hours gets you a proper feel for the place without overdoing it.

If you're staying at Cotswolds Meadow Glamping just down the road, this is an excellent way to burn off some energy before settling into the hot tub. The forest works equally well for a family walk - kids find the mud and fallen logs endlessly entertaining - though it's not somewhere you'll find facilities or a visitor centre. Bring a map, wear decent boots, and don't expect crowds. The nearest town has all the supplies you'll need, and you're close enough to Moreton-in-Marsh or Bluewood Lodges if you're planning a longer stay. Admission is free, naturally.
