Sammy’s Stick Point

Rocky limestone crags jut out above the valley here, offering proper Peak District views without the crowds you'll find at the more famous spots. This little-known viewpoint sits just outside Matlock and gives you a cracking panorama across the Derwent Valley - though you'll need to work for it.

The scramble up isn't for everyone. It's a proper climb over loose rocks and through scrubby woodland, so decent boots are essential. Takes about 20 minutes of steady effort to reach the main viewing point.

Once you're up there though, the views are well worth the sweat. Rolling green hills stretch out in all directions, with Matlock's rooftops visible below and the dramatic limestone dales beyond. On a clear day you can see for miles.

Walkers and climbers will love this spot - it's got that wild, untamed feel that's harder to find in the more developed parts of the Peak District. Families with young children might struggle with the approach, but older kids who enjoy a bit of adventure will find it exciting.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Darwin Forest or Peak Pods, it makes a good morning expedition before the day gets too hot. Pack water and allow a couple of hours for the round trip.
