Matlock

Victorian architecture climbs the hillsides where the River Derwent cuts through the Peak District's limestone heart. Matlock built its reputation on healing waters and grand hotels, and that genteel spa town atmosphere lingers today - though it's evolved into something more accessible and lived-in than its flashier neighbour Bath.

The old railway cutting now carries walkers and cyclists along the Derwent Valley Heritage Way, while cable cars still ferry visitors up to the Heights of Abraham. It's proper Peak District country here. Harboro Rocks and Haven Hill offer cracking views across the valley, though you'll need decent boots for the scramble up.

Woodland walks abound in this part of Derbyshire. Griffe Wood and Hopton Wood provide gentle rambles, while Ible Wood offers more challenging terrain for serious hikers. The countryside feels wild despite being well-walked - ancient field patterns and dry stone walls tell stories going back centuries.

History buffs will appreciate the Ruins of Pipers Inn Coaching Inn on the Roman Road, where you can still trace the old route that connected this valley to the wider world. Minninglow Hill rewards the climb with panoramic views and Bronze Age burial chambers at its summit.

Getting here's straightforward enough. Matlock sits on the A6 between Derby and Manchester, with regular trains from Derby taking about 20 minutes. It's the perfect base for exploring the southern Peak District without the crowds that swamp Bakewell and Buxton.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes real sense. You're close enough to nip into town for supplies or a proper pub dinner, but far enough out to wake up to birdsong rather than traffic. The surrounding hills and woods are literally on your doorstep.
