Sampsons Wood

The beech and oak woodland here near Yeovil is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - all dappled light filtering through the canopy and the satisfying crunch of leaf litter underfoot. Sampsons Wood delivers proper forest walking without the crowds you'd get at bigger nature reserves. There are decent footpaths threading through, so you're not scrambling through brambles, though it does feel genuinely wild rather than manicured. The woodland floor shifts with the seasons: bluebells in spring if you time it right, fungi in autumn, bare branches offering proper shade-free winter walks.

Walkers will get the most from this one, honestly. It's not a destination in itself - more a cracking spot to add to a morning if you're staying nearby. Kids might manage an hour or so before getting restless, depending on age, but it's not set up as a playground. No visitor facilities as far as we can tell, so bring water and wear proper boots if it's been wet.

If you're based at one of the glamping sites nearby - Esme's Escape or Swallowfield are both under five miles away - this slots in nicely as a morning wander before heading somewhere busier. Works well with a broader Dorset or Somerset park loop rather than as your sole destination. Free to walk, as is typical for woodland access, and there's no strict opening hours business. Go early if you want solitude, late afternoon if you fancy golden hour light through the trees.
