Sandhurst Hill

Rolling farmland stretches in every direction from this modest rise just west of Gloucester, though calling Sandhurst Hill a peak feels rather generous. At 143 metres, it's more of a gentle bump than anything dramatic, but the views across the Severn Vale are properly lovely on a clear day.

Walkers will find this an easy enough climb, suitable for families with older children who won't grumble about a bit of uphill work. The footpaths wind through typical Gloucestershire countryside - hedgerows, field gates, and the odd curious cow. Don't expect mountain drama here; this is gentle English countryside at its most understated.

What makes it worthwhile is the sense of space once you reach the top. The cathedral spire of Gloucester pokes up to the east, while the Forest of Dean rolls away to the west. It's the sort of modest summit that reminds you why people love the Cotswolds fringe - no crowds, no entrance fees, just open countryside.

Allow an hour for the round trip from wherever you park up, though finding a proper car park might be the trickiest bit. Perfect for stretching legs if you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Court Farm Camping or Red Lion Inn - both are close enough for an evening stroll when the light's golden and Gloucester looks its best in the distance.
