Wainlode Hill

Standing at just 76 metres, this modest hill near Gloucester proves that you don't need dramatic heights to earn proper views. The climb takes about 20 minutes from the village of Wainlode, following a well-worn path through mixed woodland that opens onto grassland near the top. Once you've caught your breath, the panorama across the Severn Vale towards the Forest of Dean makes the effort worthwhile.

Families with younger children will find this an ideal introduction to hill walking - steep enough to feel like an adventure without being a proper slog. The summit offers excellent views of the river meanders below, particularly striking on clear days when you can spot the Malvern Hills in the distance.

Birdwatchers often linger here, as the varied habitat attracts everything from buzzards circling overhead to woodland species in the trees below. The hill sits conveniently close to several holiday parks including Red Lion Inn Camping just 0.2 miles away, making it perfect for an evening constitutional after setting up camp. Allow an hour for the round trip, though you might find yourself staying longer if the light's good for photography. Best visited in late afternoon when the western light brings out the colours of the surrounding countryside.
