Sandworld Weymouth

If you've walked past Weymouth seafront without stopping at Sandworld, you've missed something genuinely odd and rather brilliant. It's a sand sculpture park - massive, intricate carvings created from tons of compacted sand, the sort of thing that makes you wonder how on earth anyone has the patience to do this. The sculptures change seasonally, which means returning visitors actually get something new rather than the same tired display.

This is peak stuff for families with younger children who'll spend a solid hour examining the detail work and taking photos. Adults who'd normally dismiss it as a tourist trap find themselves more engaged than expected. It's tactile, visual, and frankly quite creative. The seafront location means you can combine it easily with fish and chips or an ice cream without it feeling forced.

Being right on the Weymouth promenade, you're well positioned for the holiday parks scattered nearby - Bowleaze Cove is barely a mile away, and Haven Weymouth Bay not much further. Most visitors allow 45 minutes to an hour, which is about right unless you're particularly into sand art or have very small kids who want to touch everything.

Free to wander past and peek at, though there may be a small charge for entry depending on the season. Worth checking before you go, but even if there's a couple of quid on the door, it's not dear. The real question is whether you've got the patience for it - if you're rushing between attractions, skip it. If you're actually on holiday and not clock-watching, it's a proper little diversion.
