Lodmoor Country Park

The reed beds stretch on for what feels like forever, alive with the sound of invisible birds. Lodmoor Country Park, just outside Melcombe Regis near Weymouth, is one of those places that rewards patience - turn up expecting a quick twenty-minute stroll and you'll miss the point entirely.

This is a proper nature reserve, the kind where you're genuinely likely to spot something rare. Bitterns, marsh harriers, bearded reedlings - they're all here depending on the season. There's a visitor centre with viewing platforms, so you don't need to be David Attenborough to get a decent look. The paths are flat and easy, which makes it accessible for older walkers and families with pushchairs, though honestly the best views come from sitting still and watching for a bit.

Allow at least two hours if you're serious about birdwatching, though you can potter around for forty minutes if you're just after a walk with your dog. Spring and autumn bring the migrants through, so those are peak times. It won't cost you - admission's free.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Bowleaze Cove, Haven Weymouth Bay, or Haven Littlesea are all within three miles - this makes for a proper morning out without driving anywhere. The combination of flat terrain and genuine wildlife makes it far better value than some of the more commercialised attractions around here. Kids get restless after a bit though, unless they're genuinely into birds.
