Sapcote Castle

What remains of Sapcote Castle today is more medieval ghost than fortress. You'll find earthworks and fragments scattered across farmland just outside the village, a short drive south of Leicester - nothing like the soaring stone keeps you might expect, but that's precisely what makes it interesting if you're into how castles actually decay over seven centuries.

The site dates back to Norman times, though the visible bits are mostly 12th and 13th century work. There's a motte - that distinctive raised mound - and traces of the bailey ditch system that once protected whatever stood here. The castle was slighted (deliberately destroyed) during the Civil War, which explains why you're looking at bumps in the ground rather than walls.

Historically minded walkers will get the most from a visit. It's the sort of place that rewards spending twenty minutes with a guidebook, piecing together what each earthwork once was. Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards that I could see, and it won't hold attention for long. Allow maybe half an hour if you're thorough.

Fortway Farm Leisure & Fishery sits less than a mile away, making Sapcote Castle a decent morning outing before heading back to the caravan. The Paddocks and Mallory Meadows are both within a few miles too. Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though you'll want to respect it's working farmland. Winter's actually better for spotting the earthworks when vegetation's down.
