Stoney Cove

The quarry lake at Stoney Cove is properly cold and remarkably clear - which explains why divers treat it like a playground. Just outside Leicester, this flooded limestone pit has become one of England's most popular inland dive sites, with visibility that can stretch 30 metres on a good day. You'll see submerged quarry walls, old machinery on the lake bed, and if you're lucky, pike and perch cruising through the blue-green water.

If you're not qualified to dive, there's honestly not much to do here beyond watching others gear up and disappear beneath the surface. The shore is industrial rather than scenic - car parks, dive schools, a cafe. Walk around the perimeter and it takes maybe 45 minutes. Worth it for spotting divers, less so if you're after a traditional lakeside stroll.

For families with caravan holidays at Fortway Farm or The Paddocks nearby, a quick visit makes sense if anyone's curious about diving. Kids aged eight and up might find the whole operation interesting for half an hour. Proper scuba training runs most weekends if you want to actually get in the water.

June to September is busiest, which means more divers and a livelier atmosphere. Winter's quieter but the water's still chilly - roughly 8-10 degrees year-round. Free to visit and watch, though diving courses cost. Allow an hour if you're just passing through, longer if you're considering taking the plunge yourself.
