Sawpit Wood

There's something quietly satisfying about Sawpit Wood - nothing flashy, just a proper Sussex woodland with decent paths and enough peace to actually hear yourself think. The forest sits inland from Bexhill-on-Sea, accessible enough for a morning walk but far enough away that it doesn't feel like everyone else has had the same idea.

The wood itself is mixed woodland, the kind where you'll spot oak and beech mixing with younger growth. Walking trails meander through without too much faffing about - paths are reasonably maintained, though a wet winter means some muddy sections. It's genuinely good for families with children old enough to manage a mile or two without complaining; younger kids might get bored after an hour unless you're actively looking for insects or building sticks into things.

Historically minded visitors might appreciate knowing this land was worked as coppice - the clue's in the name, really. Old woodland management methods shaped what you see, though you need to know what you're looking for to spot it.

There's no visitor centre or facilities I could find, so bring what you need and leave what you brought. Access appears unrestricted, though always check before setting off - woodland access can change. Allow a couple of hours for a proper meander, longer if you're the type to stop and sketch birds.
