Scrip Wood

Deep in Sussex woodland just outside Hailsham, Scrip Wood offers proper forest walking without the crowds you'd find at more famous beauty spots. It's the sort of place where you actually hear birds instead of other people's playlists - dense tree coverage, decent paths, and enough space to get properly lost if you're not paying attention.

The wood itself is unremarkable in the best possible way. No visitor centre, no facilities, no great views from a summit. What you get is straightforward woodland walking among mature trees, leaf litter underfoot, and the occasional discovery of a half-hidden stream. It's ideal for families who want their kids genuinely tired out rather than trailing behind a tour group, or for anyone needing an hour or two away from things.

You won't need more than two hours here unless you're particularly slow, though the paths can be muddy in winter so decent boots matter. It's free to wander and accessible year-round, though autumn's probably the best time - the light filters differently through dying leaves and the whole place feels less like you're trudging through someone's back garden.

If you're staying at Fontmills Farm or Horam Manor nearby, this makes an easy morning walk without driving anywhere. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it's exactly what you need when you want to get out of the caravan and into actual woodland rather than manicured parks. Honest rather than spectacular.
