Starvecrow Wood

Ancient oak and beech trees tower overhead as you step into this patch of proper Sussex woodland, just outside Hailsham. The paths wind through dense canopy where dappled sunlight filters down to a carpet of bluebells in spring - though the network isn't waymarked, so bring your sense of direction.

Families with energetic kids will find plenty of fallen logs to clamber over and hidden clearings to explore. It's the sort of place where children can properly get their hands dirty building stick fortresses while parents actually relax for once. Dog walkers love it here too - acres of sniffing territory without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots.

The wood feels genuinely wild, which means muddy boots are inevitable after rain. Wear proper walking shoes, not trainers. Allow a couple of hours if you're planning to explore thoroughly, though you could easily spend half a day here with a picnic.

Fontmills Farm Campsite and Warren Wood Country Park are both within easy striking distance, making this a handy woodland fix when the seaside gets too busy. The lack of facilities means it's refreshingly uncommercialized - just you, the trees, and whatever wildlife decides to show itself.
