Seaford Head West

The chalk cliffs at Seaford Head West rise up sharp and white against the sea, and on a clear day the walk out here from Newhaven is proper rewarding. You're looking at around two miles of coastal path that rolls gently enough at first, then steepens as you approach the headland itself. The views back towards Newhaven and along the Sussex coast stretch for miles - Portsmouth visible on a good day if you squint hard enough.

It's a walker's spot rather than a sit-down destination. Most people allow a couple of hours for the round trip, longer if you fancy perching on the cliff edge with a flask. The path is well-maintained and free to access, though it can get muddy after rain and the final approach to the head is genuinely steep - not treacherous, but enough to make you work for it. Children over eight or nine will manage fine; younger ones might find the last push tedious.

The real appeal is the isolation. Unlike Beachy Head further west, Seaford Head sees fewer coach parties, so you actually get peace up there. Come in late afternoon and you'll catch the light hitting the cliffs properly golden. Sunrise walks are equally stunning if you're the type.

If you're basing yourself at Three Ponds Holiday Park nearby, this makes an excellent half-day outing. It's the kind of walk that clears your head without demanding serious hiking boots or navigation skills. Not dramatic enough to justify a special trip from far away, but absolutely worth doing if you're in the area.
