Seat How

The walk up to Seat How rewards you with one of those views that makes you forget you're knackered. It's a modest fell rather than a mountain, rising above Keswick, and the path gets steep in places but nothing that requires proper kit. From the summit you're looking across to Catbells and Blencathra - the Lake District does show off when you're up high.

It takes most people two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness, and there's no charge for it. Go early if you can. The trodden path gets properly busy on weekends and school holidays, especially with families tackling it as an achievable morning out from Keswick. Walkers will find it legitimate exercise without being soul-destroying. Kids aged eight and up generally manage it fine, though younger ones might need carrying on the steeper bits.

Timing it right matters. Early summer when the light stays late is brilliant, but autumn gives you cleaner air and fewer midges. Winter can be slippery, so save it for boots with proper grip.

If you're camping at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club or Castlerigg Hall just outside town, Seat How makes a perfect half-day walk without eating into your full-day plans. It's the sort of fell that doesn't demand the commitment of a bigger summit attempt but delivers the views anyway. From Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite you're ideally placed to explore the whole area - this would slot in nicely alongside other local walks rather than becoming your entire day.
